About La Cala de Mijas

La Cala de Mijas is located in the coastal zone of Mijas municipality, with Fuengirola on the east and Marbella on the west. The city is only a 15-minute drive from Fuengirola, 20 minutes from Marbella, and 30 minutes from Málaga Airport.

Previously, the town was known as “La Cala del Moral” (the Bay of Mulberries) because of the mulberry trees growing in the area. However, the city changed its name in the 1970s to avoid confusion with Cala de Moral, a town outside Málaga. Back in the day, La Cala de Mijas was an agricultural town and a typical small Andalusian white-washed fishing village, but the Spanish tourist boom in the 1960s changed that.

Today, there are 4,000 inhabitants in the cosy town, which has its own health centres, schools, library, police station, golf courses, restaurants, bars, shops, and much more. Although the town attracts many tourists, there is still life in La Cala all year round. It is not one of those Spanish cities that become a ghost town in the winter when the tourists leave.

What to do in La Cala de Mijas?

La Cala de Mijas has a lot to offer. You can enjoy the beautiful long beach most of the year, thanks to the exceptional climate on the Costa del Sol. You can take a stroll or a run along the coast, where you can go on the boardwalk, Senda Litoral, from La Cala de Mijas to Calahonda. You can also ride a bicycle up the mountains or take a buggy ride if you like something wilder.

If you visit La Cala de Mijas or are lucky enough to get a holiday home in the town, you will get an excellent opportunity to practice your golf swing. There is a 9-hole golf course in the centre named La Noria Golf, and two popular 18-hole golf courses further up the city called Santana Golf and Calanova Golf Club.

The area around Calanova golf is also a popular choice for property buyers (not only golfers), who enjoy having a lot of space, peace, and quiet in a beautiful area surrounded by nature. In addition, it is only a few minutes’ drive from Riviera del Sol and the centre of La Cala de Mijas, where you have all the necessary facilities.
